What bed bug bites look like

Bed bug bites are usually small, red, itchy bumps, sometimes with a darker centre. They often appear in a line or cluster of three or four, where a bug has fed several times as it moves along the skin. They are most common on skin that is exposed while sleeping: arms, shoulders, neck, face and legs.

Everyone reacts differently

Some people react strongly with large, itchy welts. Others show no reaction at all, which is why one person in a bed may be bitten and the other seems fine. Reactions can appear hours or even days after the bite.

Because bites can look alike, they are not proof of bed bugs. Check the bed for live bugs, droppings and blood spots using our bed bug checking guide.

Looking after bites

  • Wash the bites with soap and water
  • Use a cool compress to reduce itching and swelling
  • Try not to scratch, to avoid infection
  • A pharmacist can recommend creams or antihistamines
  • See a GP if bites become very swollen, painful, show signs of infection, or if you feel unwell

Are bed bugs dangerous?

Bed bugs are not known to spread disease in the UK. The problems are itching, disturbed sleep, anxiety and, sometimes, skin infections from scratching.

Questions and answers

How quickly do bed bug bites appear?

Anything from a few hours to several days after the bite, depending on the person.

Do bed bugs bite every night?

Not necessarily. They may feed every few days, so bites can appear in waves.

Can I get bed bugs from someone else's bites?

No. Bed bugs spread by moving in belongings, furniture and clothing, not through bites.
