Common pests in schools
- Mice in kitchens, classrooms and store cupboards, often after holidays when buildings are quiet
- Rats around bin stores, kitchens and playing fields near railways or parks
- Wasp nests in roofs, playground equipment and hedges in late summer
- Pigeons and gulls on roofs and in playgrounds
- Cockroaches in school kitchens
Safety first
We use tamper-resistant, lockable bait stations placed out of reach of children, traps in secured areas, and insect treatments applied out of hours when needed. We agree the plan with the site manager or bursar in advance and leave clear notes about any areas that should be kept clear for a time.
Planning around the school year
School holidays are the best time for proofing work and more intensive treatment. A visit just before the start of term catches problems that built up over the break. Wasp nests need to be treated as soon as they are found during term time, so we prioritise schools when nests are near play areas.
Records
Schools often need to show governors, Ofsted or the local authority that the site is safe. Our reports cover inspections, treatments, products, locations and recommendations.
