What counts as urgent?
- A wasp or hornet nest by a door, window, path or play area, especially if anyone is allergic to stings
- Rats seen inside the home, particularly in kitchens or children's rooms
- Pests in a food business that could affect customers or an inspection
- Bed bugs in a hotel, hostel or short let with guests arriving
- Large numbers of flies indoors that may point to a dead rodent
- Birds trapped inside a building or roof space
What to do while you wait
Wasps
Keep doors and windows near the nest shut, keep children and pets away, and do not block or spray the nest. If someone has swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, dizziness or collapse after a sting, call 999.
Rats or mice indoors
Close the door to the room if you can, put food away in sealed containers, keep children and pets away from droppings and do not put down loose poison.
Bed bugs
Do not move bedding or furniture to other rooms. Wash bedding at 60°C, bag it and read how to prepare for treatment.
Food businesses
Stop using affected areas and equipment, throw away contaminated food, clean and disinfect, and record what you found. Call us to inspect and treat.
