Why pigeons choose balconies
Feral pigeons naturally nest on cliff ledges. Balconies, especially on taller blocks, recreate those conditions. Stored items, plant pots and the corners behind them give pigeons sheltered nesting spots, and they return to successful nest sites year after year.
Problems pigeons cause
- Fouling on floors, railings and furniture
- Noise from cooing and fluttering, often early in the morning
- Blocked drains and gutters
- Mites and other insects from nests that can come indoors
- Droppings that can carry bacteria and fungal spores
What you can do
- Keep balconies clear of clutter and stored items
- Do not feed pigeons or leave food out
- Clean droppings regularly while wearing gloves and a mask, dampening them first so dust is not raised
- Remove nesting material before eggs are laid (once there are eggs or young, the nest is protected by law)
Bird proofing options
- Netting across the open side of the balcony, the most reliable option
- Spikes or wires on railings and ledges where birds land
- Solar panel mesh to stop pigeons nesting under panels
Fitting netting on higher floors needs access equipment and experience. If you rent or own a leasehold flat, check with the landlord or managing agent first. See bird proofing and pigeon control.
Questions and answers
Can I remove a pigeon nest?
Only before eggs are laid. Once there are eggs or chicks, the nest is protected by law except under specific licence conditions.
Do fake owls scare pigeons?
Usually only for a short time. Pigeons quickly learn the decoy does not move.
Are pigeon droppings dangerous?
They can carry bacteria and fungal spores. Wear gloves and a mask, dampen droppings and avoid raising dust when cleaning.
