Rats and mice
Autumn is when rodents move indoors. Mice come in from gardens and neighbouring buildings, and rats move into lofts, walls and under floors. Seal gaps around pipes and vents now, before they arrive. See rodent proofing.
Squirrels
Grey squirrels look for winter shelter in lofts. Check the roof line for gaps and cut back branches. See squirrels in the loft.
Cluster flies
Large numbers of sluggish flies gather in lofts and around upstairs windows to hibernate. See cluster fly control.
House spiders
Male house spiders wander indoors looking for mates from late August. They are harmless, but false widows around windows and porches can bite. See spider control.
Late wasps
Wasps become drowsy and aggressive in September as colonies break down. Nests die off by late autumn and are not reused.
Clothes moths and carpet beetles
As the heating goes on, moths and carpet beetle larvae become more active in carpets and wardrobes. Air and check stored knitwear before you wear it.
Autumn checklist
- Walk around the house and seal gaps around pipes, cables and air bricks
- Cut back ivy and branches near the roof
- Clear gutters and check the roof line
- Move firewood and garden rubbish away from the house
- Store garden furniture cushions in sealed boxes
Questions and answers
Why do I get mice every autumn?
Mice move indoors for warmth and food as it gets colder. Proofing entry points before October helps.
Should I treat a wasp nest in October?
Usually not. Nests are dying off and will not be reused, unless wasps are getting indoors.
