Rats and mice
December to February is peak season for rodents in homes. Look for droppings in kitchens and lofts, gnawing and noises at night. Act quickly, because rodents breed throughout winter in heated buildings. See rat control and mouse control.
Squirrels
Squirrels are settled in lofts for winter and start breeding in late winter. Deal with them before young are born in early spring.
Foxes
Foxes mate from December to February. The screaming at night is part of courtship. Cubs are born in March and April, so proof sheds and decking before then.
Indoor insects
Cockroaches, bed bugs, clothes moths, carpet beetles and Pharaoh ants are not affected by the weather outside and keep breeding in centrally heated homes and buildings.
Christmas and festive food
Extra food, more waste and spare rooms opened up for guests can all bring pest problems to light. Store food in sealed containers and keep bins closed during collection changes over the holidays.
Winter checklist
- Check lofts for droppings and gnawed insulation
- Keep food sealed and kitchens clear at night
- Make sure bin lids close and bin stores are secure
- Proof gaps under sheds and decking before fox cubs are born
