Before the visit
- Treat your pets with a vet-recommended flea product, ideally a day or two before the visit
- Wash all pet bedding and any throws, blankets or cushion covers on a hot wash
- Clear the floors of toys, shoes, clothes and anything stored under beds, so the technician can treat the whole floor
- Vacuum every room, including stairs, under furniture, along skirting, inside sofa seams and in the car if your pet travels in it. Empty the vacuum outside into a sealed bag
- Cover fish tanks and switch off air pumps, and move other small pets such as birds and rodents out of the treated rooms
- Arrange for people and pets to be out for a few hours during and after treatment
After the visit
- Stay out of treated rooms until the floors are completely dry, usually a few hours
- Keep vacuuming daily for at least two weeks; this makes pupae hatch and contact the treatment
- Do not wash or shampoo carpets for at least two weeks
- Keep treating pets as your vet advises
- Expect to see some fleas for up to two to three weeks; this is normal as the life cycle completes
When to call us back
If you are still seeing lots of fleas after three to four weeks, call us. A second treatment is sometimes needed in heavy infestations.
